Four music groups reach finals

Four groups from the Northern and Southern regions have already booked their place in the national finals of the Music Crossroads competition slated for early January next year in Balaka.

The Rebels, Amaravi and the Wonderful Spiritual will represent the Central Region after outclassing other 16 groups in the regional encounter held at Lilongwe community Hall.

The first to qualify were groups from the Northern Region at the auditions which were held at Chibavi Primary School in Mzuzu.

Meanwhile the four groups will meet other winning groups from the Eastern and Southern Regions in the national finals, before selecting the final two to represent the nation in the international showdown in Livingstone, Zambia in April.

The heat is now on the youthful Eastern Region groups which set to outdo each other in Balaka tomorrow before Southern Region concert in mid December.

Music Crossroads national coordinator Mathews Mfune told Weekender that everything was set for the Balaka concert saying the participants had an intensive preparation.

“We failed to use the home ground advantage to defend the trophy last year due to complacency, but this time around we are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that we bring the trophy back home,” he said

Malawi for the second time hosted the international finals last year at the Portuguese Club in Lilongwe which saw groups from Zimbabwe scooping the trophy.

However, Malawi has won the international finals three times following the successes of Mzuzu based Tikhu Vibrations in 2002, Lilongwe based Konga vibes in 2006 and another Mzuzu based Body, Mind and Soul in 2007 and ironically, all these triumphant occasions, were when the competition was being hosted outside the country.
