With only 14 days to go before this year’s long awaited Miss Malawi beauty pageant, the contestants are set to camp for rehearsals starting from next week.
The camping is one of the unique features of this years pageant management team to prepare the queens physically and psychologically, before the showdown on December 13 at the Cresta Hotel in Lilongwe.
The publicity secretary for the organizing committee Angela Chimaliro said the girls would camp for a period of ten days saying the camping would help the organizers to thoroughly scrutinize the background of each contestant especially on their moral behavior.
“We do not want to compromise our integrity by incorporating girls who would not be at par with both the society’s and our own expectations. Mind you, these camps promote discipline and self realization since they are trained in various avenues of etiquette,” she said.
She added: “It’s time we will have a queen based on a good balance of her intelligence and beauty, one who can properly follow issues and stand the pressure of working on very challenging projects for the good of the society.”
At least 50 girls registered for the event but the organizers through a scouting committee conducted auditions in all the three regions of the country which screened and trimmed the number to 15.
One of the judges Martha Kaukonde said the 50 entrants were trimmed to 15 after being scaled by their educational level, integrity, confidence, body structure, height, good communication skills and the way the contestants carried themselves on the catwalk.
“We were looking for someone who had a minimum standing height of 1.6 meters, good character, and minimum qualification of MSCE, single and between the ages of 18 to 25,” she said.
Some of the participants who have made it to the last ten are the Miss Lilongwe 2007 Delia Kamzati, Joyce Mphande and Edith Chigumula representing Lilongwe while Blantyre has Miss Chilomoni 2002 Yvonne Nkhata, Miss Valentine 2006 Lucia Assadi, Maureen Gunde and Rhoda Chirwa, Jane Balalika, Miss Malawi News 2007 first princess Tamara Chitanda and Emily Mwakawanga.
This years’ winner would walk away with K250, 000 cash, printers, hampers and a night for two at Cresta Hotels.
