Geoffrey Zigoma has been invited to a music festival in Tanzania next month as an ambassador for albinos in Malawi.
“I am like an ambassador in Malawi for albinos. We received visitors in 2006 on a project regarding human life of albinos and problems. I normally receive some materials which I distribute like sun glasses,” he said.
There have been reports in the international media about the killings of albinos in Tanzania whose body parts are believed to be used for magic.
Zigoma who is also in dire need of about K200, 000 to record a music video for the welfare of disabled people titled ‘Tipatseni Mwayi’, whose audio he already recorded said he would have loved if he had shot the video so that he show it to fans in Tanzania about albinism in Malawi.
“I thought shooting this video would give those people a glimpse of what albinism is all about in Malawi,” he said.
He said the K200, 000 would cater for transport to various places as well as costume for the music video.
When contacted to find out why the Ministry of Elderly and disability did not help the artist with the loan when he contacted them, Principal Secretary Elias Ngongondo said they told the artist that working on a single track was expensive.
“Yes I know the issue but what we told him was that he should produce a full album and then we work on that. This was determined bearing in mind the past experience where artists have knocked on our door now and then,” said Ngongondo.
Currently the artist said he is on a project with Music, Photography and Foreign Aid of Norway.
The musician who recently launched his first ever DVD Ndibwelera in Zomba and Lilongwe said in an interview that he was looking for the funds from well wishers to record the single track.
“I recorded this single last year after I got a loan of K9, 000 from Macoha but later I took it to the Ministry of Disabled and Elderly so that I shoot a video to reach out to many,” said Zigoma adding that the ministry promised to help him with funds.
In ‘Tipatseni Mwayi, which he recorded at Rhem studio with the help of Elvis Ching’oma, Zigoma talks about the life of albino people and the discrimination they experience as well as teach the society that they are also human beings.
“I have been moving up and down to seek money for the video but there is nothing fruitful,” said Zigoma.
Zigoma made shot to stardom in secular music when he alongside Ken Ning’ang’a released Ndatherapano which won the hearts of many.
He later turned gospel and released his first gospel album Ndazindikira before going back to secular music.
He has since gone back to gospel and has released his second gospel album Ndibwelera and has produced a DVD for the album.
“My first album never did well because I was not stable until I realised I was in the dark. Now I am a born again christian and God is really working wonders,” he said.
His DVD has eight tracks among them ‘Satana Waotcha,’ ‘Zimakoma Chonchi,’ ‘Masalmo 23,’ ‘Zikomo Ambuye,’ ‘Ndife Opambana,’ ‘Msandisisye Kutali,’ and Ingaombe Mphepo.’
